I haven’t introduced a new book to ya’ll in a long time! So for this totally awesome book Thursday I give you “Thr3e” by Ted Dekker. Here’s the synopsis:

 

“By all accounts seminary student Kevin Parsins is leading a good, if not virtuous, life. But like all people, Kevin has his secrets. And someone wants them revealed.

While driving home from a day at graduate school, Kevin receives a call from a mysterious stranger who calls himself Slater. Slater demands Kevin confess his sin in the next three minutes or the vehicle he is manning will be blown to pieces.

Thus starts a harrowing chain of events. After narrowly escaping his exploding car, Kevin continues to receive phone calls from Slater, each with another riddle, another consequence, and another three minutes to confess his sin.

The problem is Kevin is unsure of what that sin might be. And Slater’s cycle won’t stop until he figures it out.”

 

 

Let me break it down further for you.

 

 

First I’ll start with this: technically this novel isn’t classified as a young adult genre. Yet it’s not a challenging read, and everyone needs a thriller to get sucked into, right? It’s not gory in any fashion, so no worries there. Now to the good stuff…

 

After Kevin escapes the explosion and tells officers about the event, Jennifer (a FBI agent) is assigned to the case. They believe this Slater is the “riddle killer” or a copycat of him, and Jennifer’s brother got killed by the killer, so she’s very intrigued with the case.

 

Jennifer tries to get Kevin to think of the killer’s motive, but Kevin is an innocent kind of man, a man who people shouldn’t hate. A couple riddles later, always having to do with opposites, such as “what takes you everywhere and nowhere,” Kevin finally admits to have possibly killed a boy when he was young. I won’t go into too deep of details on that one, but Kevin thinks that this boy he tried to kill because of self-defense is back to seek revenge.

 

Then the number three starts to come of focus in the killer’s ways, such as the amount of time given to Kevin to confess his “sin.” But that’s not the only thing that comes in threes…

 

Jennifer, Kevin, and his best friend Sam try to solve this mystery together, but time is running out. The explosions are getting bigger, the suspense gets thicker, and every step or word spoken can be a mistake. This is a thrill ride that takes you on twists and turns you won’t ever see coming. The end, though, will catch you by huge surprise. Such a big shock that I won’t dare spoil it for you.
